Background
Ever since he became a big brother at the oh so mature age of 6, Shai'a loved to tell stories to his little sisters. Whenever possible he'd be in their nursery, watching over them and trying to make them smile and laugh. His love for his sisters benefitted his two mothers greatly, with him taking to watching over them while they worked with no complaints. One-man shows were the most common way he'd keep his little sisters entertained, acting out whatever silly little stories he could come up with. And after they went to bed, he'd fill out page after page of what he'd told them that day. Thus began Shai'a's passion for writing, wanting nothing more than to create rich universes that people could get lost in the same way his sisters did.Unfortunately, the price of success cost him. The fear of disappointing his family settled so deeply into him that he threw himself into his work. His first play being a success had to be a fluke. There was no way that could happen again! But it did. By the third production he’d started staying away from the public and after the fifth? It was a miracle to get him to leave his room for more than a few hours a week. His family tried to help but it was all for naught. He was safe inside his home, where no prying eyes could see a failure in the flesh. What good was he if he wasn’t churning out story after story, stage play after stage play? That was the only thing he was good at, right? Keeping people happy and distracting them for a few hours a night? Eventually, he cracked.Shai’a had become his own worst enemy. Overwhelmed by the mere thought of existing in a place where someone knew him was too much and he fled from his home in the middle of the night. He didn’t care where the boat he had stowed away on was going and he didn't care.He had to get away. After months of drifting from place to place, the miqo'te finally settled in Gridania. It took some time to adjust to the blatant racial tensions that the city-state sported but like any true Dalmascan, he kept his thoughts on the subject to himself. At the very least he could live in peace and solitude. Odd jobs were occasionally picked up to support himself but even a lackadaisical lifestyle can bore someone. Surely there were aspects to life that had eluded him back home - he just had to find them. But there are some nights, when he can’t drown out all the intrusive thoughts that keep him awake, that he picks up a quill and writes.
Personality
The imposter syndrome is strong in Shai’a and it’s made him incredibly anxious in his adult years. He followed his passions, did well, and competed with himself from then on to do better. Unable to bear the weight of the self-imposed expectations, Shai'a hid himself away in his room to focus on his work.To get some semblance of peace after the pressure became too much, he left everyone behind. He's an unknown outside of Dalmasca Inferior and intended to keep it that way. Without the fear of having to maintain a certain image looming overhead, Shai'a decided it was time to really embrace and experience life after missing out on so much.Nowadays he hides his ever-present anxiety behind a mask of attempted charm and chill. It may or may not be working but so far he's been able to go out and have fun without many issues.
Headcanons
say my name.
His name is pronounced "Zye-uh" and not "Shy-uh".(Think "dye" but with a "z" instead of "d")
His plays were always a family affair - his younger sisters all worked in some aspect of the production and as a result every play he wrote seldom focused on romance.
Trope.
book in hand.
Shai'a always has a book and pen at the ready. While he may have fled from his home he's still a writer at heart and is constantly looking for new inspiration to try and break the hold his depression and the writer's block it brought with it on him.
Shai'a has a rather heavy Dalmascan accent when he speaks Common.
accent.
greying.
The whites of his hair and tip of his tail are from stress. While he's trying to accept that it's natural, it honestly just adds to his already high stress levels. The cycle is never ending.
Being in a new place away from his family and everyone who would recognize him, Shai'a is on some kind of Eat, Pray, Love journey of self discovery. He's trying to learn how to embrace life and new experiences.
eat. pray. love.
Swole.
Shai'a loves to work out. He's been told that working out makes people happier so he started working out in the hopes of overcoming his depression. It hasn't worked but he's not complaining about his shredded new figure.(Think Chidi from The Good Place)
His glasses, his glasses. He can't see without his glasses.
velma.
enchantment? enchantment!
Shai'a can channel his aether to enchant items to move on their own. It's never a lot, mostly used to stir his coffee or turn pages in a book without having to actually lift a hand. That being said, he does have an enchanted pen that's fully capable of writing on its own. It's normally found scribbling away into whatever notebook he has open.
Shai'a currently works at Mystic Materia Oasis on Tuesdays and Fridays.
